PREVENTION TIPS

GENES: Studies show only 10-25% of women are born with abnormal breast cancer genes. This means 70-80% of breast cancer can be avoided. (Read more)

ESTROGEN: 20 Million American women who use Estrogen Replacement Therapy (ERT) must know there is a SAFER estrogen that has been used in Europe for 50 years. The name of the estrogen is...(Read more)

TESTS: Estrogen Metabolite Index (EMI) and Estrogen Quotient (EQ) are the best test for predicting if you will get breast cancer. Mammograms are important but only tells you if cancer is present. The EMI and EQ are simple...(Read more)

FOODS: Delicious and inexpensive foods can significantly LOWER your breast cancer risk. Studies show women who eat these foods...(Read more)

VITAMINS: Studies show this vitamin can lower breast cancer risk by 30-90%.

• GENES: Studies tell us that over 70% of twin sisters of women with breast cancer DO NOT get breast cancer!  This means that although these women have identical genes to their sister (identical twins) they did not get breast cancer and therefore up to 70% of breast cancer may be avoided if you keep the damage to your breast protection genes low! If you are born with normal breast protection genes, the way you develop cancer is through damage to those genes over your lifetime.  The more damage to your genes, the greater your chances of breast cancer.  Studies tell us that the damage to those genes can be reduced through many different steps like eating right (see foods below) and following a simple program consisting of natural supplements.  The important point is that there are STEPS you can take to reduce the damage to your breast protection genes and therefore reduce your risk of breast cancer!

• ESTROGEN: The name of the safer estrogen is ESTRIOL.  Estriol is a weak estrogen that controls menopausal symptoms in most women but is not as stimulatory to the breasts, uterus, and other tissues as the stronger, synthetic estrogens that have been used in the U.S. since the 1950's.  Studies show that Estriol may not increase the risk of breast cancer nearly as much (if at all) as the traditional strong estrogen replacement therapy (ERT) American doctors have prescribed.  If you do not need estrogen, then don't use it, but for the millions of women who need estrogen replacement (ERT) Estriol may be a godsend.  To read more about Estriol, please see SAFE ESTROGEN: 20 Secrets to Reducing Your Breast Cancer Risk (Chapter 4).

• TESTS: The EMI and EQ are simple urine tests that are the best predictors of breast cancer in the future!  Women with a low EMI are 30-50% more likely to get breast cancer than women with an EMI above 2.  If your EMI is below 2, there are steps you can take to IMPROVE your EMI and bring it to 2 or above. In other words, this is an entirely reversible risk factor: IF YOU KNOW ABOUT IT!  We feel strongly that every woman must know her EMI and if it is below 2 take steps to improve it to 2 or above (For a further discussion of EMI and EQ please see SAFE ESTROGEN: 20 Secrets to Reducing Your Breast Cancer Risk (Chapter 5 and 6)

• FOODS: Studies show women who were highest in 3 important nutrients: Lutein (spinach, green leafy vegetables), Lycopene (tomatoes, watermelon), and Carotenes (carrots, squash, pumpkin) had HALF the Breast Cancer risk as those women lowest in these three nutrients. There are easy, inexpensive ways to build these nutrients into your diet and the diet of your family. These nutrients are important for prevention of many other diseases besides breast cancer.  Simple recipes such as tomato soup, great salads, low sugar pumpkin pie are just a few of the easy, delicious ways to pack more of these nutrients into your diet.  For a further discussion, please see Chapter 19 in SAFE ESTROGEN: 20 Secrets to Reducing Your Breast Cancer Risk.

• VITAMINS: Women who were in the highest 25% for Vitamin E from food had 30-90% LOWER breast cancer risk than those women who were in the lowest 25%.  Yet those women who took Vitamin E supplements had no reduction in their risk.  Why did the women who were highest in Vitamin E from food have a significantly lower risk of breast cancer while those who took supplements did not?  The question has puzzled researchers because those women who took supplements often took several times the amount that one would get from food.  The answer appears to be that Vitamin E is not just one vitamin but a whole family of Vitamins.  When you eat foods that contain Vitamin E you get the whole "family". However, the most popular supplement in America is just d-alpha tocopherol (which is the first type Vitamin E discovered). Women who take supplements are only getting one member of the Vitamin E "family" and not the member that has been associated with reducing breast cancer risk.  Moral: If you take a Vitamin E supplement, you should take one that contains the whole Vitamin E "family" including the tocotrienols (a vitamin E "cousin"). For a further discussion, please see Chapter 9 in SAFE ESTROGEN: 20 Secrets to Reducing Your Breast Cancer Risk.

FOLIC ACID:
Women who drink alcohol have a 60% higher risk of breast cancer than non drinkers.  Women who were highest in folic acid, even though they drank alcohol, had NO increased risk of breast cancer.  Moral: If you use alcohol, drink in moderation AND make sure you get enough Folic Acid in your diet or by supplement. Since studies show 3 out of 5 American women are low in folic acid, supplementation makes sense for many women. Folic Acid supplements are inexpensive and can be found at any health food store or pharmacy.
